The Fairlawn Community

The Fairlawn Citizens Association is a non profit group of residents who live in the Fairlawn community of Washington, DC. Bordered to the west by historic Anacostia, and to the north by the Anacostia River, Fairlawn, is one of the older communities east of the Anacostia River, developed in the 1920's as the rural part of the city began to be developed. Over 90% of the homes in the area are single family housing units. Some of the landmarks in Fairlawn are Anacostia Senior High School, the under construction new Anacostia Public Library which will be on the site of the old one, and the historic Smokestack of the old Carroll Laundry.

The FCA has its general community meetings the third Tuesday of every month, except for July and August recess. Meetings are held at the United Planning Organization's Anacostia Service Center, 1649 Good Hope Road SE.

To get to Fairlawn, you go east on Pennsylvania Avenue SE, cross the Sousa Bridge and the Anacostia River. The first neighborhood you reach is Fairlawn community.  Its boundary lines start at the southern shore of the Anacostia River on Pennsylvania Ave east, making a 45 degree right hand turn on 25th Street SE, continuing to S Street SE, with a slight left onto Naylor Road SE. Staying on Naylor Road past Fort Stanton Park and the Skyland Shopping Center on the left until you reach Good Hope Road SE. At this point the boundary takes a right hand turn on to Good Hope Road and continues for almost two miles to Martin Luther King, Jr Ave and the exit ramp from 295 and the 11th Street Bridge.

After the 2000 Census, and much controversial debate, the Fairlawn Community was removed as a single community in Ward 6, to one whose electoral boundaries are now split between Ward 7 and Ward 8

Public schools in Fairlawn are Orr Elementary at Minnesota Ave and 22nd St SE, Kramer Middle(Junior High) School on Q Street between 16th and 17th Sts SE and Anacostia Senior High School at 16th and R Streets SE.

Public transportation is provided by Metrorail(subway) and Metrobus (street). The closest Metrorail station is the Anacostia Station at Martin Luther King, Jr Ave and Howard Road. Fairlawn is also served by several Metrobus routes that make stops in the community, B2, M6, U2, V5, W6, W8, 32, 34, 36, 92
